LETTER: Save Ribblesdale Children’s Centre from any cuts

I AM writing on behalf of Home-Start Pendle and Ribble Valley to echo the concerns of Julie Magee (“as I see it” February 24th) with regards to potential cuts at Ribblesdale Children’s Centre.

The centre provides an excellent service to families and young children throughout Ribble Valley. Home-Start was fortunate to be based at Ribblesdale Children’s Centre for almost two years up until June 2010 and we continue to work very closely with Fiona Owen and the staff there in supporting families in the area.

With funding cuts already impacting on services to families in Ribble Valley, it is even more important that the excellent work of Ribblesdale Children’s Centre is allowed to continue. It is services such as Children’s Centres and Home-Start that are truly preventative and are helping to shape our future society.

In our opinion, cuts to these crucial services would ultimately lead to a greater burden on public funding in future. These cuts cannot be “necessary” – it is the services that are provided that are wholly “necessary”.
