Volunteers who help to keep a local village looking its best were “as pleased as punch” to be recognised at the North West Regional Finals of Britain in Bloom.
Representatives from Whalley in Bloom attended the awards at the Southport Convention Centre.
Discretionary awards were presented before lunch and the Whalley in Bloom representatives were thrilled to win the first award of the day – Community Effort 2017 – which recognises the huge part that the entire local community plays in beautifying the village of Whalley.
After lunch, the awards MC, Bill Blackledge MBE, moved onto the main classifications during which Whalley – classed as a small town for the RHS in Bloom competition – was awarded a gold medal in the Best Small Town category as well as the overall Best Small Town Award.
The village has been selected by the judges as the regional representative for entry into the 2018 Britain In Bloom national competition making all the volunteers “as pleased as punch”.
A spokeswoman for Whalley in Bloom said: “We are absolutely delighted and would like to thank everyone who has helped us win these awards; our hard-working Lavender Ladies and ‘Laddies’, the Whalley in Bloom committee, all at Whalley Abbey, our businesses and our local helpers, supporters, villagers and everyone else who has been involved in any way. These awards are for all who helped us make Whalley bloom in 2017!”
