WADDINGTON - ‘Titanic’ is subject of talk

WI HOTPOT - At the monthly meeting of Waddington WI, vice-president Mrs Jean Oldroyd welcomed everyone including guests and friends.

The meeting began with a hotpot supper made and served by Country Kitchens. The speaker was Miss Heather Slater on “Life as a Nanny in Saudi Arabia”. She was a telephonist in Burnley before taking a post as nanny to the sons of a Saudi Arabian prince, living at the family’s palace. Women there are not allowed to drive or vote, so simple pleasures such as walking in the desert, having afternoon tea at the British Embassy or impromptu parties at a nearby British Aerospace facility were cherished.

Heather had lots of time to herself when the young princes went off to boarding school. She was taken shopping, flew to Cyprus and Orlando, sailed aboard the Prince’s yacht with the family to the South of France, saw Arizona and the Grand Canyon. Heather enjoyed every minute of her seven years with the royal family and only came home after the prince married his fourth wife.

There will be an outing to Hey’s Garden Centre in the Lakes on October 18th. The next meeting on October 4th will take place in the refectory at St Helen’s Church. The speaker will be Mr Tony Mac on “The Titanic”. Tea hostesses are H. Emsden, P. Entwistle and D. Edmondson.
