Video footage of Clitheroe car fire
Shocking video footage of a BMW car catching fire in Clitheroe has been shared by a local resident.
Simone Williams (33), of Clitheroe, who had just finished work at Homebase, was a bystander on Whalley Road when the V reg BMW set on fire.
She filmed flames engulfing the car, but concerned for her own safety and that of those around her, she left the scene prior to firefighters arriving.
"It was so sudden I didn't really know how to process it," said Simone. "It was eerie more than anything.
"When it started popping and banging I was convinced it was going to explode and there were quite a few people including myself in close proximity to it.
"The fire service arrived within minutes though and from what I could see there was no one hurt."
Clitheroe Fire Station watch manager Dave McGrath who attended the incident which happened at just before 5pm on Wednesday said the man and the woman in the car both escaped without injury.
He explained that the car had set on fire when it had stopped at the temporary traffic lights on Whalley Road near the turn off to Littlemoor Road.
"A person in the car behind it alerted the BMW driver to the fact his car boot was on fire," said Mr McGrath, "as the BMW driver was totally unaware.
"In the time that it took us to arrive the fire had spread to the back seat of the BMW."
Two firefighters subsequently wore breathing apparatus and used one hose reel to extinguish the fire.
Firefighters were in attendance for approximately one hour and tried to ease traffic congestion as best they could.
