It is believed he had been knocked unconscious by cattle on the farm.
The coroner has been informed and the Health and Safety Executive is making enquiries.
News of the tragedy has shocked the local farming and church community.
Mr Knowles was a retired churchwarden of St Lawrence Church, Barton.
Retired Fellside Team Rector Rev Jeff Finch said the farmer had been in church last Sunday as usual.
He said: “It’s a devastating blow and will be to all the parishioners of Barton and the whole agricultural community. He just loved his work, loved his church and served God and his people.”
Rev Finch said: “I saw him on Sunday and he just looked so well. He was with his family and so happy. To have the strength to be working at his age really sums up the character and strength of Keith. It’s such a tragedy.”
Paying particular tribute to his church work Rev Finch said: “Keith was a very loyal and dedicated churchwarden over many years, always supported by his wife Brenda and well respected. He was a very quiet and industrious worker.
“To all the clergy who served in the Fellside he has always been immensely loyal and supportive.
“He will be sadly missed and also greatly missed in the farming community.”
