Firefighters were called to reports of a blaze involving the property shortly before 8pm on Friday. Crews said there has been a build up of household waste in the backyard where the fire started.

A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue said: "On arrival we were directed to the rear of the property where there was a well-developed fire in the rear yard. This consisted of household waste and furniture. The fire had spread to the property which caused severe damage to windows and doors. Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the building and extinguished the fire."

Crews were at the scene for approximately 90 minutes and the cause of the fire is being treated as deliberate and an investigation has been completed and passed onto the police.

Fire officials are also urging motorists to park responsibly after the fire engine struggled to reach the property because of too many cars parked along the road.

"On approach to the incident appliances had restricted access to the street due parked cars. This caused a delay on dealing with the fire. Please try to also consider access for fire engines onto your street/road. Double parking can cause a delay on the Fire Service reaching your property."

He added: "If you are aware of a build-up of household waste in empty properties near to where you live then please report this to the council who can arrange for it to be removed."
