Russian military flights over Lancs: MP quizzes minister

Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans asked Secretary of State for Defence the Rt Hon Michael Fallon MP what reports he has received of flights by Russian military aircraft over Lancashire and if he would make a statement.

The response from the Ministry of Defence was: “In accordance with the Open Skies Treaty, Russian military personnel, accompanied throughout by RAF personnel, conducted observation flights over the UK during the weeks of May 11th and June 1st, 2015.

“The aircraft involved was unarmed and pre-certified by all Open Skies states. It flew on a flight plan authorised by the Ministry of Defence, in this case including over Lancashire, and the UK received copies of all photos taken. The UK conducts similar missions in Russia.”
