The daughter of a retired Ribble Valley school headteacher, who currently works in Azerbaijan, is running the London Marathon in aid of the Rosemere Cancer Foundation.

Philippa Mahon (44) whose parents still live in Clitheroe was diagnosed with breast cancer on New Year’s Eve 2012.

With her well-travelled job, Philippa was working in Qatar when she initially found a lump on her breast and returned to the UK to learn the diagnosis. After moving back to the North West to stay with her parents – dad Phil, a retired headteacher of Oakhill College, Whalley and mum Pat, a former director of childcare at Blackburn and District Children’s Home - Philippa was treated at Rosemere. She underwent weekly chemotherapy and in December 2013 was given the all clear. She said: “Rosemere really is quite a unique and special charity. The consultants, nurses and volunteers do an amazing job; I felt reassured which was so important for my family and me. There are lots of people who depend on Rosemere and their wonderful support and I wanted to repay them by doing something special.”

Philippa works in sports event management, working on some of the most high profile events including the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, the Rugby World Cup and the British and Irish Lions Tour. She is currently busy with the inaugural European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan. Throughout her treatment, Philippa kept herself fit and focused and maintained a positive attitude. “I consider myself relatively young and fit and like a challenge. I’m looking forward to coming back in April to run the Marathon. It’s the first time I’ve done it for over 10 years and I’ve been through a lot since then, so I’m hoping that I’ll do it justice,” she added.

Dan Hill, area fund-raising co-ordinator for Rosemere Cancer Foundation, said: “The London Marathon is a big challenge, but Philippa is so strong and determined, we’re confidant she will do herself proud. Anyone wishing to sponsor Philippa can do so by logging onto
