Plan to save lives on Pendle roads

Fire crews from Nelson and Colne – in conjunction with the police – staged a road safety event at Brierfield Community Centre.

Nelson Fire Station Manager Tony Ashworth explained: “Pendle area has some of the worst statistics for road traffic casualties in the county and LFRS are working with all their partners in the area to get the road safety message across.

“The aim of the event was to interact with as many of our target group as possible – the event took place following the end of Friday prayers with the local mosque assisting by advertising the event.”

Fire-fighters demonstrated rescue techniques from a crashed car and there was a Wasted Lives presentation to young people identified by the police.

The sessions covered speed, seatbelts, mobile phones, drink and drug driving.

The police also displayed “Daniel’s car” – the car in which Daniel Birch lost his life – one of the police officers at the roadshow was directly involved in the incident and related his personal experiences to the audience.
