Whalley and District Lions, who formed earlier this year, have entered “Best Kept Village Competition 2015”.

The first time Lion President, Gillian Darbyshire, was involved with this is through Whalley Chamber of Trade when the group won “Best Kept Village” in 2008.

This spurred Whalley in Bloom into action and £10,000 was raised through various events and fund-raising to get this off the ground.

This year “Whalley in Bloom” are in the national category and have worked so hard every year since. Many of the Whalley and District Lions and friends turn up every Saturday morning to the Spar Car Park at 10 am to get the clean up started.

Clean ups consist of a regular 12 or so volunteers who have given up time in May, June and July to do this, picking litter, weeding and general cleaning and clearing around the village. There are so many others helping throughout the village by doing their bit and picking up litter on their journeys.

Commenting on their good work, Gillian said: “I am delighted with the response from so many villagers to come together to make Whalley Village a better place. Thank you to all of the volunteers who have put time into this and the results are showing in how much better the village actually looks.

“We would like people who work/live/visit Whalley to help by using litter bins provided, clean up after themselves and take pride in the Village.”
