The wife of a former director of the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times has died after a long illness.

Mrs Heather Cowgill, wife of Mr John Cowgill, was born and brought up in the Yorkshire Dales at Preston-Under-Scar, an area which she always loved passionately.

Heather’s family moved to Ilkley when she was a young girl and she attended an all-girls school near to the family home. She treasured her time there and she would remember it affectionately throughout her life.

The family eventually moved to Paythorne and Heather finished her primary school years at Gisburn, before moving on to Bowland High School, which was then known as Riversmead.

Heather went to live in Clitheroe and worked in a variety of jobs, especially in shops, where her interest in people and her ability to get on well with them stood her in good stead.

A very keen golfer, she was a member of the ladies’ section at Stonyhurst Golf Club and was a long serving member of the ladies committee and former Lady Captain. She was also a bridge player and extremely fond of the game.

Heather enjoyed extensive travelling all her life and latterly, she and her husband John spent many happy holidays cruising the West Indies, visiting Menorca and especially liked going to Cyprus where they formed many lasting friendships. She also enjoyed her many visits to see family in France and Sussex.

Heather is survived by her husband John, brother Albert and sister-in-law Anne, her daughter Sheila and son-in-law Jim, her son Ian and daughter-in-law Sue, four grandsons Mark, Paul, Dan and Joe, and three great-grandsons Jayden, Cameron and Oliver.

Heather was greatly loved by her family and will be sadly missed by them and her many friends, but will always be remembered for her great sense of humour and her ready smile.
