Burnley pays its respects on Remembrance Sunday

Civic dignitaries, veterans and the public stood together to pay their respects to our war dead on Remembrance Sunday.

Although the ceremony was low key due to coronavirus restrictions, a short service was led by the Bishop of Burnley the Rt. Rev. Philip North.

Organised by the Burnley branch of the Royal British Legion, members and veterans laid wreaths at the cenotaph in the peace gardens in Grimshaw Street.

Among those paying their respects was Sir Simon Towneley and his daughter, Coun. Cosima Towneley.

Remembrance Sunday in Burnley was marked with dignity

Now aged 99, Sir Simon served with the King's Royal Rifle Corps during World War Two and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1942.

Wreaths were also laid by Burnley MP Antony Higginbotham, the Mayor and Mayoress of Burnley Coun. Wajid Khan and his wife Anam and the Leader of Burnley Council Coun. Mark Townsend.

The public also got the opportunity to lay wreaths and pay their respects after the event.
