Pendleside real ale will help hospice!

Peter Gouldsbrough, boss and head brewer of Reedley Hallows Brewery, Burnley, has brought out a cask beer called Pendleside, and for every nine-gallon barrel sold £3 will go to Pendleside Hospice at Reedley – about 4p per pint.

To launch the beer, Peter appropriately chose The Swan With Two Necks at the Pendleside village of Pendleton – recently named Britain’s “Pub of the Year” by the Campaign for Real Ale.

Hospice volunteers and friends from the pub trade and CAMRA sampled the new brew along with snacks and gave Pendleside beer the thumbs-up. Village pub regulars were soon downing the locally-named brew.

Formerly the head brewer at Moorhouse’s, Peter spent six years working as a scaffolder before returning to the brewery business. He set up Reedley Hallows Brewery in a small way nearly two years ago, and moved to bigger premises on Rossendale Road Industrial Estate as demand soared.

“For every barrel sold, the brewery donates £1.50 and there’s another £1.50 on behalf on the customer,” said Peter.

“When it reaches £3,000 we’ll give the first cheque to the Hospice, and then carry on from there. We’ve started supplying it within 50 miles, but we’ve had enquiries from as far away as Southampton.”

The new beer, with an ABV of four per cent, got an enthusiastic welcome from Steve Dilworth, landlord of the Swan with Two Necks.

He said: “It’s a lovely pale bitter, very refreshing and a good session beer. It’s going to be a superb summer drink.”
