OFFICIALS at Clitheroe Town Council are in talks with Lancashire County Council’s highway department to have extra grit bins in Clitheroe this winter.

However, they are appealing for reliable, local “snow champions” who would look after the bins, to come forward.

A spokesman for the town council said: “The key issue we wish to explore before this initiative can go ahead is to identify volunteers who would be prepared to be the custodian of such bins, which will be locked to avoid misuse i.e. key holders who would be responsible for spreading grit where necessary on the highways in their locality.

“If you are one of those people, please get in touch with Clitheroe Town Council by calling 01200 424722 or by calling into the office at 9 Church Street (opposite Clitheroe Library). The office is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can also e-mail or write to the Town Clerk, Ian Woolstencroft, at 9 Church Street, Clitheroe BB7 2DD.

“If the council receive a good response they will make arrangements with the County Highways Department to introduce this scheme as soon as possible.”
