FIREFIGHTERS were involved in one of their more unusual rescues on Sunday evening after a man became stuck in a cavity.

Crews were called to the rear of the Derby Arms in New Market Street, Colne, shortly after 6 p.m. to free the trapped man, believed to be in his early 20s.

It is thought he became trapped after climbing over a wall at the rear of the parish church and finding himself stuck at the top of the 15ft deep cavity.

Two triple extension ladders, a rope pack and lighting were used by firefighters to free the man.

He was treated by ambulance crews for minor neck and arm injuries following the incident, which occurred shortly after 6 p.m.
