The people of Brussels are standing defiant against the bombers and carrying on with their everyday lives, according to East Lancashire Euro MEP Sajjad Karim.

Speaking from the city where he has a flat just 100 metres from the second of the two terrorist bomb attacks on the Belgian capital he praised residents for their stoicism saying: “It is clear they are not letting the bombers stop them from carrying on with their normal everyday lives.

“They are standing firm against them.’’

At least 34 people were killed and dozens injured after co-ordinated attacks on the main airport and the Metro system which is just yards from his home. Mr Karim, who lives in Simonstone, said: “After the initial chaos the streets became deserted, it was not like a normal working day at all, it was quite eerie.

“I made my way to the European Parliament where police and the army were stationed and there is now lockdown in the Parliament for three days with nothing but essential business taking place.’’
