Man rescued from Leeds and Liverpool Canal

THE wife of a retained firefighter was the hero when she helped a man struggling in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Mrs Pam Edwards, wife of Padiham firefighter Jimmy Edwards, was walking with her daughters-in-law Melissa Edwards and Chanais Tye when a jogger alerted them to the man in the canal near Shuttleworth link road.

It is not known whether the man, said to be in his 50s, had fallen or jumped into the canal, but he was in very real danger and was already showing signs of hypothermia.

Mrs Edwards helped to comfort and reassure the man until a fire engine from Burnley and a specialist underwater unit from Nelson arrived to pull the man to safety. He was then taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital.
