Lancashire in second place of drinking fine league of shame

Thousands of young Lancashire women have been handed on-the-spot fines after getting drunk in the street, it has been revealed.

In the past five years, 3,596 Lancashire lasses were punished with £80 fines for nuisance public drinking, police figures obtained by a national newspaper showed.

The figures have sparked concern about the women’s health.

The Lancashire figures, which include Preston, places the county second in a national league of shame.

Topping it is Northumbria, where 4,629 fines were dished out, including in Newcastle – home of television show Geordie Shore, which shows off some of the town’s booze-fuelled debauchery.

In third was Merseyside, where Liverpool’s collection of bars and clubs saw 3,410 fines handed out.

Jackie Ballard, chief executive of charity Alcohol Concern, said: “Binge drinking in ­particular can put women at risk.

“Society needs to challenge the idea that drinking to excess equals fun.

“To do that we need to crack down on cheap, strong booze and its constant availability and promotion, as well as encourage pubs and clubs to offer some interesting non-alcoholic alternatives.”

Lancashire Police said a warning is issued before the fines.

A spokesman said: “We understand people to want enjoy themselves on a night out but we ask they do so safely and responsibly.

“At times officers have to issue fixed-penalty notices as a warning disorderly behaviour is not welcome.”
