A drive to make Ribble Valley residents aware of breast cancer has been launched.
The Stepping Out team at Ribble Valley Council has organised a one mile walk around Clitheroe as part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
And the Communities Against Cancer Team at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust is out in the Valley promoting the “Touch, Look, Check’ or TLC campaign encouraging women, and men, to spot signs and symptoms of breast cancer early.
The walk takes place next Tuesday and is suitable for all ages and abilities including those with prams and mobility aids.
Walkers will leave the Platform Gallery at 10-30am and the walk will be rounded off with refreshments at the Inn at the Station in King Street. Everyone is being asked to wear something pink to raise awareness of breast cancer.
Although one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, survival rates have been improving for 40 years and almost two out of three women with the disease now survive beyond 20 years.
More than 80% of breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50 and most men who develop breast cancer are over 60.
The TLC campaign highlights the importance of regular self-check routine which involves touching your breasts to feel anything unusual, look for changes in the shape or texture and check anything unusual with your GP.
Symptoms to look out for include a lump or thickening in the area of the breast, a change in the size or shape of the breast, a change in the shape of the nipple, long standing pain in the breast or armpit area.
