Fighting chance in aid of charity
A Clitheroe man is set to battle his way into raising funds for Cancer Research UK in memory of his uncle, Mick Devine.
Jonathon “Jonny” Devine (31) will be strapping on his gloves for a MMA (mixed martial arts) charity cage fight on April 28th to raise money for the deserving cause.
The father-of-three lost his uncle, Mick, aged 60 in February after he suffered with cancer of the brain.
This is the second time Jonny is using his fighting skills to raise money for charity. Last year he took part in a boxing match to boost funds for nine-year-old Rhys Whatmore, the son of Amanda Whatmore, a close friend of his.
Rhys was diagnosed with Medullablastoma, a type of malignant cancerous brain tumour that starts in or near the cerebellum and can spread to other parts of the brain or spinal cord.
For his most recent fight, Jonny, who currently weighs 15 stones and 8 pounds, has been working alongside 25 to 30 other people and has been preparing himself for his bout - which takes place at the Mercure Blackburn Dunkenhalgh Hotel and Spa - by training hard and learning new martial arts.
Jonny has been channelling his charitable exploits outside the cage too as he took part in a sponsored bag-pack in Clitheroe over the weekend at one of the local supermarkets.
Jonny, who has a seven, five and three-year-old, said: “Cancer research is a great cause to donate to as it is a problem that is close to a lot of our lives with people we know love and cherish who have fallen to this terrible illness. Please donate generously and let’s beat cancer soon.
“Training for the match is going well. It’s very hard and physical but rewarding. This time I am doing an MMA match, which involves grappling submissions punches and kicks inside of a cage. I am dedicating this match to honour the memory of my uncle, who was also my dad’s twin brother.” Tickets for the boxing match are priced £20 can be bought by e-mailing Jonny on [email protected] or by calling him on 07815718988.
