Clitheroe Chess club A team played their final fixture in the 2017-18 season at home at the Swan and Royal hotel against Burnley B team.

Earlier in the season Burnley B won by three boards to two at home. For this match they were unable to raise a full team and arrived with only four players thus giving Clitheroe a one board start.

The first game to finish was on board two where Phil Titterington met the same opponent as in the first fixture and arrived at the same result which was a draw. Keith Melling on board three had an interesting battle before he too settled for a draw. On board four Eric Mansfield gradually gained the upper hand in a position which had potential for some strong counter-play. Eventually he reached a position of overwhelming strength and his opponent resigned. To complete an excellent night for Clitheroe David Talbot also managed to overpower his opponent giving Clitheroe victory by four boards to one.

Although the competitive part of the season is virtually finished the club will continue to meet at the Swan and Royal hotel from 7-30pm on Tuesday evenings right through to the start of the next competitive season in September. The club is always looking for new members and for anyone wanting to learn or improve their chess the summer months are when help can be given without the distraction of fixtures against other teams.
