Ribble Valley MP, Nigel Evans has been elected president of the Parliamentary Space Committee, a cross-party group dedicated to promoting public and parliamentary awareness about space.
The committee is responsible for emphasising the economic advantages, for the UK, of investment in space.
Speaking from Westminster Mr Evans said: “Being president of a group such as the Parliamentary Space Committee is an absolute pleasure for me because science and technology are so vital to the economy. What is more, they are extremely important to the Ribble Valley with employers such as BAE Systems, who employ around 11,000 people, contributing so much to the local area.
“As president, I wish to work with the committee to encourage children towards education in STEM subjects. The academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics are the platform upon which the space industry is built. As such, educating the next generation in these subjects is of crucial significance.
“Further to this I will campaign to create gender equality in the physical sciences and engineering which is currently dominated by men. Utilising all members of the public to promote the space industry is something which I am passionate about.”
Nigel will be taking up his presidential responsibilities soon.
