Twenty years of the Ribble Valley Diabetes UK group were celebrated at Clitheroe Rugby Club, where past and present members were joined by the President of Diabetes UK, Richard Lane OBE, and the charity’s Chief Executive, Baroness Barbara Young.
Baroness Young outlined some of the medical research into diabetes that the charity supports and has pioneered, such as the development of a vaccine which may prevent youngsters at risk from Type 1 diabetes. She also thanked Tesco for the three-year partnership with Diabetes UK in fund-raising and in raising awareness of diabetes through its campaigns and educational pamphlets – free in Tesco stores. The Ribble Valley group recently raised £650 at the Clitheroe Tesco store for research. The group’s chairman, Gordon Dixon, was thanked for his long and dedicated service over the 20 years since the group was founded.
The group meets on the second Monday of the month at 7-30 p.m. at the rugby club. The next meeting is on Monday September 14th when Tracey Balko will present “Diabetes and a Healthy Heart”.
