Police in the Ribble Valley have swooping this week on pickup trucks and vans driven by crooks looking to steal from yards and gardens.

In the past week, thefts have been reported in Clitheroe, Read, Billington and Chatburn, involving scrap metal and garden ornaments including a sundial and a chimney pot.

Inspector Graham Lister said: “We are making stop-checks on the type of vehicle that gets driven round by these thieves.

“Our message to residents would be that if you have anything that could be taken for scrap, don’t leave it outside.”
