CLITHEROE hosted an emergency exercise observed by Government officials on Tuesday.

The exercise, co-ordinated by Ribble Valley Borough Council, featured 11 organisations, including the police, fire and rescue service, ambulance service, Lancashire County Council, United Utilies and the Environment Agency.

About 100 emergency personnel took part in the emergency planning exercise, which was designed to test radio communications systems in the event of a massive power failure caused by flooding in Clitheroe town centre, with a resultant loss of telephones, mobile phones and e-mail.

The event, observed by Dr Nigel Brown, director of resilient telecommunications at the Cabinet Office, was a significant success and the outcome will be reported to the Government.
