A former employee at Calderstones hospital in Whalley has appeared before Blackburn magistrates charged with benefit fraud relating to sick pay and temporary injury allowance.

Joanna Heys (43), of New Chapel Street, Blackburn, pleaded not guilty to furnishing false information relating to her fitness to work. She was remanded on bail until September 7th.

Miss Catherine Allan (prosecuting) said Heys had gone off work sick after an accident while working at Calderstones.

“The prosecution allege that almost immediately she started working at a primary school as a teaching assistant,” said Miss Allan.

“She was being paid for that job while receiving sick pay and temporary injury allowance. The prosecution says there was a total overpayment of £10,435 over a 10-month period.”
