Clitheroe’s newly elected Town Mayor was appointed in the traditional manner at a “Mayor Making” ceremony, which formed part of the town council’s annual meeting on Tuesday.
Councillor Susan Knox was elected as Town Mayor for the ensuing municipal year, after she was proposed by Coun. Mary Robinson and seconded by Coun. Val Cooper. Her Deputy Town Mayor, Coun. Alan Yearing, was proposed and seconded by Coun. Allan Knox and the newly appointed Coun. Kevin Horkin respectively.
In keeping with tradition, processions to and from the ceremony were led by the Halberdiers and the Town Sergeant, with the civic party and guests leaving the Moot Hall at Clitheroe library after the ceremony, proceeding down Church Street, into Market Place and then up Castle Street to The Swan and Royal Hotel.
Having served as a town councillor for the past four years, Coun. Knox works for Lancashire County Council as an older people’s social worker.
She commented: “My priority over the next year is to try and make the town council more accessible to the people of Clitheroe. All in all, no-one is more surprised than me to be standing here today. Over the years, I have witnessed how the Mayor can be a unifying force for the town and I really hope that I can be that too.”
