Sunday is Open Farm Sunday and Windy Pike Farm, near Gisburn, is opening its gates to visitors for what promises to be a fascinating and enjoyable day out for the whole family.

Windy Pike Farm is joining hundreds of other farms nationwide hosting events to celebrate British farming and food.

Windy Pike Farm is in Carters Lane, Gisburn (BB7 4HZ) and the event runs from 2 to 5pm. It will include a walk with farmer Henry Rowntree, to understand the breeding of his Aberdeen-Angus cattle, plus a chance to see the ewes with their lambs and learn how modern farming can enhance the countryside with wildlife corridors and ancient woodland.

Visitors can also taste Aberdeen-Angus beef. All age groups are welcome and there is no charge for the visit. Hand washing facilities and a disabled toilet are on site and visitors should wear appropriate footwear and clothes.

Henry said: “I am really looking forward to welcoming everyone and showing them around the farm. Our pedigree Aberdeen-Angus herd is in the middle of calving so there will be plenty of calves with their mothers to see. Most of our herd is sold on for breeding, but the bulls not suitable for breeding are steered and sold on to Waitrose for their prime beef.

“The lambs are all growing well following a good spring and are sold to Morrisons when they are ready. We are very focused on the environment and have planted new hedges and trees to complement our ancient woodland that edge the River Ribble. These all create a good habitat for the wildlife.”
