This is the first artist’s impression of a £9m. redevelopment planned for Clitheroe’s 900-year-old market.
The ambitious and state-of-the-art transformation of the market, which will be unveiled tomorrow (July 22nd), is aimed at bringing modern retail and leisure facilities to Clitheroe – and work on the first stage will get under way by next spring. Ribble Valley Borough Council’s policy and finance committee agreed its intention to award the contract to redevelop the 1.4 acre site to Nelson contractor, investor and developer Barnfield Construction late last year.
Their three-year scheme featuring a 60-bed hotel, retail and leisure units, 56-space car park and revamped market with a hall, 34 cabins and19 stalls, will see a new lease of life brought to the market and the potential for attracting top new retailers.
Ribble Valley Borough Council leader Stuart Hirst said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to bring modern retail and leisure facilities to Clitheroe town centre and Barnfield’s plans, which are nearing finalisation, are truly impressive.
“This project constitutes one of the biggest ever private sector investments in Clitheroe town centre and we fully expect it to stimulate further investment and growth over the coming years.
“These are truly exciting times for Ribble Valley and I invite residents to come along and see the plans for themselves.”
Tim Webber, managing director and chairman of Barnfield Construction, said: “The scheme promises to provide a new retail and leisure experience for Clitheroe, not only with the creation of a new market, but by securing a number of high-quality retail and leisure operators not currently represented in the town.
“We invite residents to come along and meet us tomorrow, where we will be at hand to answer any of their questions.”
Detailed plans for the scheme will be submitted by September and, subject to planning approval, Phase 1 involving the construction of the new market is scheduled to start next spring, with Phase 2 involving the remainder of the site completed by the summer of 2019.
The plans and artists’ impressions will be displayed in the Ribble Valley Borough Council Chamber from 10 am to 4-30 pm on Friday (July 22nd) and 10 am to 3 pm on Saturday (July 23rd).
Representatives of Barnfield Construction, DAY Architects, NJL Planning Consultants and Ribble Valley Borough Council will be at hand throughout Friday to answer questions.
The exhibition will then move to the Level C reception at the Ribble Valley Borough Council Offices in Church Walk, Clitheroe, until Friday, August 5th.
