A Clitheroe student who only spoke basic English six years ago has been honoured for outstanding achievements at Blackburn College’s annual Construction Awards.

Jefferson Piaun Sanchez (21), of Highfield Road, was awarded the Blackburn College Shield for the Most Outstanding 2nd Year Level 3 Extended Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering Student. His family moved to Lancashire from Alicante in Spain in 2008 and since then Jefferson has spent time at Blackburn College, where he completed his BTEC in Electric Engineering, an English GCSE, alongside an A level in Spanish.

“There are a lot of great opportunities at Blackburn College which is why I chose to continue to Level 3,” he said. “One of my highlights was being chosen to go to Namibia in 2013 as part of a college visit.”.

Tutors selected Jefferson because they felt he had been a model student, who was very self-motivated and a good team player. He is a volunteer civilian instructor with the Air Cadets and eventually he would like to work for BAE Systems.

“I wasn’t expecting to win this award but I’m very proud of myself,” Jefferson said.

He is now at the University of Leeds studying a four-year degree in Mechatronics and Robotics.
