The proprietors and staff at Stansfields Sandwich Bar and Deli, Clitheroe, donned fancy dress during a fund-raising day to help a local dad who is running the London Marathon.

Adam Wallace (36) is hoping to raise £1,500 in aid of Ronald McDonald House at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, as a thank you to the charity, which provided a free room for his family in 2001 while his newborn son, Riley, was fighting for his life.

Adam’s twin children Riley and Cara were born in 2001. During the pregnancy abnormalities were discovered with Riley’s heart and numerous hospital visits followed. The twins arrived after 31 weeks at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital. There were complications as the babies were nine weeks from full term.

Sadly, Riley passed away aged just four-and-a-half months, but Adam cannot forget the support he was given by volunteers at the charity, which included an option to stay close to his baby for as many days as needed. He said: “Ronald McDonald House has helped more than 20,000 families in its 84 family rooms since it opened 20 years ago, and it costs £600,000 a year to run. I am grateful to anyone who can pledge support to keep this worthwhile facility running.”

On Saturday. Stansfields Deli owners Richard and Melanie Atkinson, along with all the staff wore Ronald McDonald T-shirts and curly red wigs to encourage customers to make donations while Adam’s dad, Eric, manned a raffle stall at the entrance to the shop on Castle Street Clitheroe.

The winner of the raffle was Mrs Judith Barnes, of Grindleton, and almost £200 was raised towards Adam’s target.

A delighted Adam said: “Richard, and everyone connected with Stansfields, has been absolutely fantastic and I would like to express my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to them all. I am close to my target and with a final push during this last week before the marathon I’m sure I can achieve my goal!”
