A water leak has left households, schools and businesses in the Ribble Valley without water this morning.

Thousands have been affected by a leak in Slaidburn Road, Waddington, which has left properties in Clitheroe and the surrounding villages with no water, or just a trickle.

The following schools are closed today: Brookside Primary, Pendle Primary, St James, Chatburn Primary and Ribblesdale Children’s Centre. Both sites of the Clitheroe Royal Grammar School were closed, but only open to students sitting their GCSE and A-Level exams.

A spokesman for United Utilities apologised and said the company is working very hard to restore normal service as quickly as they can.

“We received reports of a burst water main in the Clitheroe area in the early hours of this morning,” the spokesman explained. “The burst is on a 15-inch main and was near Mayfield Farm.

“Our engineers are in the process of moving water around the network to avoid the burst, a process called ‘re-zoning’, which should bring water back to many customers.

“We will start the repair on the main shortly. Bottled water and tankers are on their way to the area while we sort out the problem.”

The spokesman added: “I don’t have the exact numbers of customers affected, but is likely to run into thousands rather than hundreds until we do the re-zone.”

More details will appear on this website throughout the day.
