A YOUNG boy had to be airlifted to hospital after an accident at his primary school in Sabden.

The 10-year-old fell off a piece of gym equipment during a PE lesson at St Mary's RC Primary School on Friday, jarring his back.

The North West Air Ambulance helicopter hovered into the school grounds, to the delight of the pupils, and took the boy to the Royal Blackburn Hospital.

Luckily the pupil was discharged the same day with bruising.

Headteacher Mrs Claire Halstead said: "Fortunately the pupil did not suffer any serious injuries but it was very painful. We rang for an ambulance because at first it was suspected spinal injuries.

"I was pleased to hear it was just bruising and nothing more serious. It was all very dramatic but the only reason the helicopter came was because it was the next available ambulance."
