A Whalley resident raised a total of £1,455 for Macmillan Cancer Support after hosting a garden party to celebrate her 60th birthday.

Pam Lavery asked friends and family for donations instead of presents as she was keen to raise funds for the charity’s Hyndburn Fundraising Group in memory of Barbara Donohoe, whose daughter Sarah is the partner of Pam’s son Jonathan.

Barbara was a dedicated fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support for almost 20 years until she died in 2010 aged 61 from a rare form of eye cancer.

A passionate fundraiser, first as a member of the Hyndburn Committee and then chairperson of the group, Barbara’s commitment to the charity was recognised when she received The Macmillan President’s medal for 10 years of outstanding service in 2001, presented to her by the Duchess of Kent. Two years earlier in 2008, Barbara had been awarded the Richard Hambro Macmillan award in recognition for her exceptional leadership skills.

Hannah Richmond, East Lancashire fundraising manager for Macmillan, said: “We are so grateful to Barbara’s family and friends for continuing to fundraise in her memory. She has definitely left a fantastic legacy. With people like Pam fundraising for us, we are able to fund our vital cancer services in East Lancashire and be there for more and more people living with cancer.”
