The premature birth of their son has prompted a couple from Clitheroe to hold a fund-raising evening for the unit which helped keep him alive.

Dexter Underwood was born 14 weeks before his due date to parents Dale Underwood and Danielle Shaw, both 26, who were told when he was two days old that they were likely to lose him.

Cared for in the neonatal intensive care unit at the Lancashire Women and Newborn Centre, Burnley, Dexter’s condition fluctuated from birth, with five punctures to the lungs, a bleed on the brain and a heart defect all diagnosed in swift succession. After what his family describes as “amazing care” by neonatal staff, Dexter was finally allowed home 119 days after he was born.

Dexter’s father Dale said: “We have been so lucky and Dexter has received the most amazing care. We wanted to try and do something to raise money for the neonatal care unit, so we are holding an official coming home party at Clitheroe Cricket Club on Friday, March 25th, for all our friends and family. We have already had lots of generous prize donations from a number of local businesses, so we will be selling raffle tickets on and before the night itself.”

l Anyone wishing to donate to the family’s fund-raising efforts, or who would like to donate a raffle prize, please contact Dale on 07527 224581.
