The writer and broadcaster, who was former Downing Street director of communications, says the new run, organised by Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All, will be a major highlight in Burnley’s events calendar.

And he is encouraging people to sign up for the 10K charity race which is less than two months away.

Mr Campbell, who is a keen runner, said: “I think it’s fantastic that the Pennine Lancashire 10k has come to Burnley. I know the run has previously taken place in Blackburn, but I know that Burnley will do it better! It will be an amazing sight to see so many people running through the heart of the town, especially as so many of them will be bringing in money for really deserving charities doing important work both locally and nationally. I wish all the runners the very best of luck.”
