Sweet trip down memory lane for residents

A Clitheroe care home has taken its residents for a trip down memory lane with the opening of a unique sweet shop.

Riverside Care Centre has given its residents the opportunity to purchase sweets from yesteryear with its classic sweet shop, which features a 1940s wooden till and 1950s style scales.

Old favourites ranging from Victory V and Pontefract cakes to Parma Violets and butterscotch tablets are available at the sweet shop with all money raised going towards the residents’ comfort fund, allowing for extra treats and contributions for trips outs.

Gail Ainsworth, Riverside Care Centre Manager, said: “At Riverside Care Centre we are always looking at ways to provide our residents with even more enjoyable activities and initiatives. The sweet shop gives our residents the opportunity to relive their childhoods and offers them extra treats.

“Our staff are fully behind the project and it is interesting to talk with residents at the home about their past experiences and how shopping in previous generations differs from how it is today.”

Located in Sawley, Riverside Care Centre provides residential care, including dementia care, for up to 40 residents. The home has 40 single bedrooms and four lounge areas, which overlooks its large garden that its residents can enjoy, as well as a conservatory.
