Whalley in Bloom wins trio of awards at RHS Britain in Bloom competition 2023

Whalley in Bloom volunteers were thrilled to win three awards in the prestigious 2023 RHS Britain in Bloom competition.

Whalley in Bloom volunteer gardeners endeavour to make the external living and working environment of Whalley more attractive with a variety of horticultural projects.

New projects this year include a stumpery at the Old Grammar School and a raised wildflower bed on the site of the old mortuary within the Churchyard of St Mary and All Saints Parish Church.

Val Clark, chairman of Whalley in Bloom, said: “Despite a challenging year ranging from drought to torrential rain, we have once again managed to impress the judges with our efforts.

“Not only have we won a Gold award in our category of Northwest Small Town, we are absolutely delighted to win the overall Best Small Town in the Northwest.

“We were also awarded the Heritage Cup for the very first time.”

Bernard Pendleton, chairman Britain in Bloom Northwest, stated: “Whalley in Bloom won the Heritage Award for the wonderful work that volunteers do to promote the heritage and history of Whalley.”

Britain in Bloom inspires community groups in towns, cities and villages to make positive changes to their local environment through horticultural, environmental and community action.

Next year will mark the 60th anniversary of Britain in Bloom. Over the years, Bloom has continued to bring people together, forged life-long relationships and enriched lives.

The theme for this milestone year is ‘friendship,’ and people are invited to share their stories of friendships that have blossomed because of Britain in Bloom, It’s Your Neighbourhood or other community gardening projects.
