SEVENTEEN years ago Galloway Antiques Fairs organised their first antiques fair at Stonyhurst College, near Clitheroe, and they have been returning twice a year ever since.

Over the weekend of February 17th to 19th they are back with 30 dealers displaying a wide range of antiques and fine art.

The magnificent venue lends itself well to this type of event. Set in the heart of the Ribble Valley, the approach to Stonyhurst College is spectacular, with twin lakes either side of the driveway offering reflections of the Elizabethan Manor House built in 1592 by Sir Richard Shireburn.

It was occupied as the family seat until 1794 at which time the hall and estate were gifted to the Society of Jesus as a new home for its college. Stonyhurst College is now one of the country’s premier independent boarding schools.

Among the dealers will be Mark Buckley of Skipton selling inlaid Edwardian furniture; Corn Mill Antiques, also from Skipton, who deal in small items of furniture, porcelain and decorative items; Drop Dial of Bolton, specialising in clocks; and Oldfield Antiques of Ilkley, who sell silver and silver plate.

Jewellers will include Once Upon A Time, Anderson Jones and Scarab. Angling Antiques of Barnard Castle will have a good selection of fishing-related items, always popular with the Lancashire crowd, while Jim Dickinson of Cheshire will sell antiquarian maps and prints. Bryan Chew of Dorset will bring along some fantastic period oak, again very popular around Stonyhurst.

There will also be a few new faces this time round, including Whittle and Draper Fine Art of Lancashire, who specialise in British art from 1700s to the late 1900s; D&M Chaddock of Cheshire, who sell antique metalware including brass and copper fireside furniture; and Wanted on Voyage, of Buckinghamshire, who sell superior vintage luggage and sporting goods.

The antiques fair will be open from 10-30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily over the three days. For more information, including directions to Stonyhurst College and a two-for-one ticket offer, visit
