An evening with strings attached

The Christmas party of the Clitheroe branch of Lady Farmers was held at The Calf’s Head Hotel, Worston.

Guest speaker and entertainer for the evening was the very popular harpist Fiona-Katie Roberts, of Haworth, who is well known both locally and nationally. After an introductory background and history of the harp throughout different civilisations, members were most interested to learn that not only did Fiona-Katie compose her own music, but also that she designed and built her own harps, having at present a collection of no less than 32!

The one which was brought along for the evening had four sets of strings and was used to demonstrate the range and flexibility of the instrument. The ladies were then invited to play much smaller versions and designs in groups and “rounds” – leading to learning and laughter!

Following a selection of more seasonal tunes, the speaker was thanked by the president, Angela Whitwell, who also presented the landlady of The Calf’s Head – the group’s regular venue – with a Christmas gift for the staff in appreciation of the excellent service received over the year.

Members were informed of various events taking place at other branches, and committee members were reminded of the meeting on January 9th.
