As your children get older it gets harder to try and think of something quirky but fun to buy them for Christmas without breaking the bank.

Here are some great ideas for boys and girls:

Spy Net Watch and Spy Net Spyclops (both products RRP are £49.99, available via www.smythstoys.com) – Ruaridh (9) is spy mad. Infact he would like to be a professional one. To help him in his quest, he tested out the Spy Net Watch and it was so great, he now wears it for bed! It looks like a normal watch (which is what you want if you don’t want people to know you are a spy!), but it features a hidden camera and microphone which allows you to capture up to 20 minutes of video, 2,000 photos and three hours of audio.

With a touch screen for easy playbacks of videos and photos, you can keep an eye on the enemy, while using the watch for normal things like telling the time! Everything can be downloaded via a USB cable so the spy can keep all the evidence.

And if you need help working out the evidence, then look no further than the Spy Net Spyclops which is a fabulous magnifier.

You connect it to the television and watch as objects are magnified to 200 times their original size. There is a specimen tray and vial to so you can keep all your evidence in one place and make sure the investigation is thorough and nothing important is lost.

007 – eat your heart out!

Not to be outdone, the girls can have plenty of fun too. The Not Dance-Along Peekaboo (RRP is £22.99 and available via www.toysrus.co.uk) will soon have the boys joining in as it’s real fun. Tested by Flora (7) and a young pal, it proved to be a winner. The idea is you press Peekaboo’s head and then watch him spin and dance while playing the popular Twirlywoos theme tune. Suitable for children aged 10 months and older.

And if you are anything like Ruaridh and Flora, you will love the strange and quirky Oddsville. This wonderful place can be brought to life by the Voice Activated Walking Fuse and Pogo (RRP is £29.99, www.tesco.com) We had brilliant fun trying this out, it’s pretty simple, you just press the Oddbods hand to start them off and then watch them as they speak, clap or shout or even better walk and talk back in their very own and very quirky Oddbods language.
