Book Review: Under a Mackerel Sky. A Memoir by Rick Stein

His television programmes have you heading for the kitchen and he just has the human touch. So it was intriguing to read his memoir on life growing up.

Rick had it good and bad. He was one of five children and much loved. But his father was bi-polar and committed suicide when Rick was 18. Rick’s answer was to flee to Australia and work in an abattoir and on the railways. But it was on his return to England that Rick began to blossom.

He opened a restaurant in his favourite holiday home of Padstow in Cornwall and his expertise brought him success and the famous name as a chef which he had today. The book charts his life, his family and his new life with his second wife in Australia. Its a dish worth reading!
