A NEW attraction is in store for visitors who take the guided tour of Stonyhurst College this summer – a beautiful illuminated manuscript which gives a lively account of the Hundred Years' War.
"The Chronicles of Froissart", lavishly illustrated and decorated in gold leaf, was brought back from the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. It has been kept at Stonyhurst since 1837 and provides an insight into how war was reported in medieval times.
In this week's Clitheroe Advertiser & Times there's a special voucher for visitors to save as they see "The Chronicles of Froissart" as part of the popular summer tour of the college's museum, public rooms and gardens.
Simply cut out the two-for-the-price-of-one voucher and hand in at the ticket office on the day of your visit. The normal adult price is £6 per person, concessions £5.50.
Stonyhurst, a Grade I Listed building, is renowned for its magnificent towers and gardens and is home to the famous Catholic independent boarding and day school.
J.R.R. Tolkien, author of "The Lord of the Rings", wrote part of his epic trilogy during his stay at the college and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of the Sherlock Homes detective stories, was a pupil between 1868 and1875.
During the tour of Stonyhurst you can see the desk on which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle carved his name and the table on which Oliver Cromwell slept before the Battle of Preston.
The voucher is valid from July 21st to August 25th, 2008.
