Dust off your dancing shoes for Anzac Day
AN old-fashioned tea dance is being held in the Ribble Valley to mark this year's Anzac Day.
The event, at Waddington Social and Bowling Club, is in aid of the serving and ex-Service community and will raise funds for the Royal British Legion's Poppy Support services. Sponsored by Anzac Biscuits, it takes place next Saturday, April 26th, at 3 p.m.
Part of a national initiative to mark Anzac Day, the Waddington event has been organised by Clitheroe's Mandy Brennan, who can be contacted on 01200 441551.
Tea dances grew in popularity during the First World War by providing respite for British Servicemen or Women on leave. Now the Royal British Legion has reintroduced the tea dance, with a modern twist, to mark Anzac Day – the day the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (Anzac) troops landed at Gallipoli in 1915.
Building on the success of last year's Tea Dances, more than 50 events are expected to take place nationwide including a celebrity event hosted by the Australian High Commission with a special guest appearance by Dame Edna Everage.
The event sponsors, Anzac Biscuits, will provideg music and tea and biscuits. The biscuits, named after the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, were originally baked by Australian wives and mothers left at home as a treat for their loved-ones on the front-line.
Anzac Biscuits support the Royal British Legion by donating 4% from its sales all year round and can be found in most major supermarkets
