SENIOR citizens in Ribble Valley are being encouraged to take part in more sport thanks to a new scheme called "Silver Mondays".

Each Monday, a series of sports and leisure activities will be on offer to the over-60s at St Paul's Parish Hall and Ribblesdale Pool, Clitheroe.

Ribble Valley Council and Sport England have joined forces to encourage elderly residents, particularly those in Clitheroe's Edisford and Low Moor wards, to take part in more physical activity.

The scheme, which offers swimming, aerobics, tai chi, indoor bowls and refreshments, for just £3, will be launched by Ribble Valley Mayor Beverley Jones on Monday, with free swimming at Ribblesdale Pool from 11 a.m. to noon, taster sessions and a tea dance at St Paul's Parish Hall from noon to 3 p.m., and free goodie bags featuring a specially-commissioned Silver Mondays DVD, muscle balm, energy drink and information leaflets.

The DVD features retired Ribble Valley nurse and GP Moya and Edgar Ainsworth talking about their memories of exercise as they grew up and how it has become more important to them as they try to stay fit and healthy in retirement. It follows them taking part in a fitness session and ends with Moya, who has never kicked a football, scoring a goal on an indoor pitch!

Silver Mondays is available to over-60s throughout Ribble Valley, but particularly the Edisford and Low Moor areas. To take part, and claim your free goodie bag, go along on Monday, or you can get more details from the council's healthy lifestyle team on 01200 414484.
