HUNDREDS of Ribble Valley children enjoyed a half-term treat of magical storytelling at The Grand, in Clitheroe, when they heard Hans Christian Andersen’s enchanting fairytale “The Nightingale”.

Presented by Rossendale-based touring theatre Horse and Bamboo, The Nightingale story was beautifully crafted using masks, puppets, animation, and music.

Written in 1844, The Nightingale was inspired by Andersen’s love for the opera singer Jenny Lind, who was known as the Swedish Nightingale.

Because of his outstanding legacy of storytelling, we now celebrate Andersen’s birthday – April 2nd – as International Children’s Book Day.
