There are plenty of headsets out there and it’s getting more difficult for manufacturers to offer anything new or interesting to tempt us into purchasing their products, Skullcandy have come up with a unique idea for their Crusher headset, is it a winner or just a gimmick?
The Skullcandy Crusher comes in three colours red, black and white the design is easy on the eye, perhaps a bit bulky looking for my taste, the ear cups are well padded and sound insulation is pretty good, even though the headband isn`t as well padded for some reason. Build quality is not too bad considering the price.
The bass volume control is situated on the back of the left ear cup and is a basic slider so you can adjust the level of bass vibration, this feels a little cheap and nasty and an audible bleep when the power is on would have been handy. There are no volume controls on the headset or cable I am afraid that has to be done via your device, now you can get up to 40 hours of use on one AA battery, depending how much bass you go for.
The battery compartment is behind the right ear cushion and the whole thing is not that heavy considering the size of the ear cups. Access is easy enough
The Skullcandy Crusher fold up nicely for transportation and comes with its own carry bag; mind you they do fit round the neck OK, providing it’s for a short time as they do feel like a garrotte after a while.
The cable comes with a mic which isn`t the best I have tried, the one touch button is just for answering /ending calls and pause/start, the cable also unplugs from the headset for easy storage
Now the unique selling point to these is the Dynamic bass which is powered by its own internal amplifier this produces a bass sound that should satisfy even the most demanding bass addict and is very impressive especially when its pumped right up, the vibrating ear cups take a bit of getting used to at first, felt like my head was being massaged at first (either that or I was having a stroke)
To be honest with the amp turned off the sound is good and rich, with a dynamic sound that fulfilled my bass needs, I tried a variety of music from Led Zep to Techno and the crusher performed well, the tight fitting headset also helped with insulation, mind you I wouldn`t like to be sat next to someone on the bus with these on cranked right up as the external noise is loud!
I found the best level was around 25% for the amp, anymore and you’re looking at future hearing problems, the vibration on full can be irritating after a while so unless you are a real bass sadist then don`t go there. Be warned these are loud!!
I have to admit these are great sounding headphones without the novelty bass on and apart from the cheap looking mic (which isn`t that useful) they are spot on for the price and put headsets that are twice the price to shame.
Comfort and performance is pretty good perhaps a little bit too bulky looking for my taste yet that aside these are great for everyday use.
