The 22nd Ribchester Music Festival starts this week with a beautiful choral concert on Saturday evening (June 7th) at St Wilfrids Church in Ribchester, and what’s more, Festival goers will enjoy it for free!
Stonyhurst College’s Schola Cantorum will perform a selection of sacred and seasonal works, in preparation for their forthcoming tour of Rome, including pieces by Edward Elgar, Balfour Gardiner, Malcolm Archer, Mendelssohn and Haydn. Everybody is welcome.
The evening will be complemented by a cheese and wine tasting in the Village Hall, presented by Festival sponsor Booth’s Supermarkets, for which there is an £8 charge with all proceeds going directly towards the cost of the Schola tour. Tickets for the cheese and wine tasting can be obtained in advance by ringing the Festival Booking Office on 01254 878881, or can be bought on the night.
The Festival continues next Thursday evening (June 12th) when lovers of string quartets will enjoy the Royal Northern College of Music’s Zelkova Quartet, fresh from a recital at St Martin in the Fields, performing Beethoven, Bartok and Brahms. A wonderful evening is complete with a late night jazz performance by The Encompass Trio in Ribchester Village Hall. A lovely twist to this year’s festival is that several of the young musicians will, in their performances, remember the centenary of the outbreak of World War One.
Tickets for all concerts and fringe events are priced at no more than £10 and can be bought by ringing the Ribchester Festival Box Office on 01254 878881, or bought in person from the Whalley Wine Shop or from the Ribchester Arms.
