Stonyhurst College’s Big Band is venturing on tour to the Far East next term, giving concerts in Hong Kong and China.
As part of the build-up to the tour, the band provided a fabulous evening of fund-raising entertainment last Saturday. The historic college’s Top Refectory was festooned with Chinese flags, lanterns and dragons for the occasion.
An audience of more than 100 parents and friends enjoyed all the Big Band’s favourite numbers – including Fly Me to the Moon, A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square and the themes from James Bond and the Pink Panther – as they dined on delicious hot pot and home-made cakes and puddings.
A raffle added to the excitement and the top prize – two nights for two at The Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane – was won by Mr and Mrs Redmond, whose daughter plays trombone in the band.
The Far East tour is a very exciting opportunity for the band, which has previously played in Bruges and Paris, and will help to strengthen Stonyhurst’s cultural exchange with China. Many pupils at the College are learning Mandarin and several will undertake some work experience in China over the summer.
The Big Band is now looking for sponsors for official tour waistcoats, kit bags and music folders and would love to hear from anyone interested in supporting them. If you can help, contact the college on 01254 826345.
