Not many pictures are taken from the vantage point that keen photographer Ken Geddes had to capture this photograph.
Ken, a leading member of Ribblesdale Camera Club, had taken the rare opportunity to ascend the scaffolding around the spire of St Mary’s Parish Church, in Clitheroe, currently being rebuilt as part of a major restoration scheme.
While up there he couldn’t miss the chance to get this shot of the “Union of South Africa”, an ex-LNER Doncaster-built A4 class loco, number 60009, steaming into Clitheroe. It was one of the last “steam specials” to pass through the town this summer on a rail excursion, heading for the Settle to Carlisle line.
If you fancy improving your photography skills, or are looking for a new hobby now the darker nights are drawing in, Ribblesdale Camera Club meets on Tuesdays at 7-30 p.m. at West Bradford Village Hall. It is a very friendly club which welcomes new members of all abilities and ambitions. Potential members are welcome to try a few meetings before deciding if it’s for them.
